About Us

We figured most of you following our blog know us pretty well, but for those of you who don't here is a little about us.

Hi. I'm Sarah, the oldest of the three, who spent the last 2 months doing Crossfit in order to be able to keep up with the boys on this trip. :-) I recently graduated from massage therapy school, and am interested in multiple types of natural healing modalities - my favorite being essential oils. I've had several different caregiving jobs over the past four years; and while some days may be challenging, overall it is very rewarding. Some other things I enjoy doing include hiking, playing volleyball, helping others and spending time with friends.

Top 3 things I'm looking forward to:
   1) Visiting our family & friends
   2) Niagara Falls
   3) Zion National Park

Hi, I'm Jacob, I'm pretty good at disc golf, math and making a lot of stuff fit into small places. I've worked at a lot of different jobs in the recent years including sprinkler irrigation, rodeo photography and appliance repair, but my passion is film making; filming, editing and visual effects is what I enjoy doing most. And latey I have been very blessed to have traveled to Japan and Israel to film and experience the different cultures of those beautiful countries. I also enjoy backpacking, volleyball, photography, rock climbing, and traveling.

Top 3 things I'm looking forward to:
   1) Filming some amazing creation
   2) Going to Canada
   3) Visiting friends and family

Hi, my name is John, although most people call me Johnny. I'm 19 years old and rather tall at 6 foot 3 inches. I am a pianist, appliance repair technician, mountain biker (as much as I can be living in relatively flat San Antonio), and more recently a longboarding enthusiast. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, flying my DJI Quadcopter, playing volleyball, and running (as an exercise, not just running around randomly… cause that'd be weird). I may not be very outgoing, but I'm friendly, unless you just ate the last butterfingers… then we may have some trouble.

Top 3 things I'm looking forward to:
  1) Going to Maine
  2) Visiting family and friends
  3) Seeing a California beach

Sorry there are no photos in this post, it's a result of our perfectionist nature, we couldn't find the right ones. We will update the post once we take some good photos of us, that we like! :)

Arizona - The Land of Many Views

This morning we arrived at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park and started on the 28 mile drive through the park. We stopped at several of the scenic overlooks and took lots of photos. We saw some really neat petroglyphs and old ruins and lots of petrified wood.  Along the way there were plenty of lizards scurrying about.   There was even a stop at the Old Historic Route 66 where we found this car and took the photo below.

We drove through Coconino Forest this afternoon on our way to the Grand Canyon. It was a nice change in scenery compared to the view of the flat bare desert of yesterday's drive.

We stopped in Flagstaff to pick up a few groceries, fill our water jugs, get gas, and check the tire pressure (the light had come on earlier). I went in to get groceries while the boys went to get gas and check the tires. Then back on the road to the Grand Canyon.

As we approach the Grand Canyon, the third National Park of our trip, we are in awe of the beauty that surrounds us. Jacob comments that he likes Arizona's scenery better than that of New Mexico, as he's busy taking pictures. I have to agree, although I did think New Mexico had some pretty amazing landscapes. We've made 5 U-turns today. No, not because we got lost, but because we had to go back and take a picture. The wind has been picking up during the last few hours and is currently pretty strong - almost enough to knock you over. We heard it's supposed to be really windy the next few days.

We will be at the Grand Canyon for three days. Then it's on to our next stop: Zion National Park, UT.

Day 1 - On the Road

Day 1 started with an alarm going of at 4:30am; time to shower, finish loading the car with last minute items and say goodbye to the rest of the family. We left the house at 6:13am with our first stop being the Davis Mountains State Park, 408 miles away. I (Jacob) the early bird of the three had the first shift of driving, while Sarah and John went back to sleep for a couple hours. Once we got onto I-10 West it was a straight shot to the Davis Mountains.

We arrived at the Davis Mountains around noon after driving through a beautiful but deserted desert landscape. At the park we found a picnic table at a scenic overlook for lunch. After walking around and taking some pictures for an hour we were back on the road for the Guadalupe Mountains National Park where we would spend our first night.

After a two and a half hour drive we arrived at the Guadalupe Mountains at 5:15pm, but somewhere on our journey west we cross over into MDT, although our phones wouldn't update with the correct time, which caused us to get up and hour earlier than we intended to the next morning. :(
With the extra hour gained we where able to set up camp and eat dinner, and we still had enough time to go on a hike before sunset. After dark we went over to the outside of the visitor center and used the WiFi to upload the first post of this blog.

The hike we went on in the morning took us into a really neat canyon and out on top to a beautiful view of some of West Texas's rugged country. The hike back was uneventful and we spent the rest of the morning taking down camp and repacking the car, which was my job, and it involved unloading everything and repacking it to make everything fit, after lunch we where back on the road headed for Gallup, New Mexico, where we would get a hotel for the night. I'm writing this at the hotel here in NM, its 11:30pm as the train outside blares its horn super loud, and i'm ready to go to sleep.
So goodnight everyone! Be sure to stay tuned for more updates as we continue on our journey west.

Here are a couple photos from Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

And Thus the Journey Begins

After eight months of planning, many hours of mapping routes and making reservations, and a final three days of intense packing, sorting and repacking; we embarked on our 50 days, 10,000 mile roadtrip through 38 states and Eastern Canada. We don't know what's in store for us along our journey, but whatever arises, be it good, bad or ugly, we will go through it together.
